So let’s start with the basics. What is a leap year?

We have all been taught that there are 365 days in a year. But in reality, it actually takes the Earth almost 365 days and six hours to revolve all the way around the Sun. So every four years, to make up these all these extra hours, one more day is added to the year to keep the calendar in sync with the Sun.

For those who were lucky / unlucky enough to be born on the 29th February, it’s a time to celebrate their birthday (finally). But for the rest of us mere mortals, it’s a day like every other. Here are our inspiring ideas to ensure you make the most of your extra day.

Look up
It seems like a silly thing to say but most of us look straight in front or straight down. Look up and you’ll notice things you’ve never noticed before- a beautiful tiled area on an abandoned building, some interesting graffiti, a stained glass window or maybe just a bird nesting in a tree. Whatever it is, it’ll add something a little different to your day.

Explore your home town or nearest city
It’s easy to become accustomed to our surroundings but there’s probably something you’ve never done before right on your doorstep. Visit an art gallery, go for a walk round the park or even try a new cafe.

Move
Most of us are guilty of making excuses when it comes to exercise. But there’s no time like the present and Spring is on its way so embrace the moment. Do that yoga class you’ve been thinking about or have a session with the local basketball club. You could take a friend for moral support and motivation or go it alone and push yourself out of your comfort zone.

Switch things up
Adding simple touches to your home can really spruce up your interior and add a new lease of life to a room. You could buy some brightly coloured scatter cushions or a scented candle, or maybe just treat yourself to a bouquet- fresh flowers always lift a room.

Pop the question
Traditionally it is usually a man that gets down on one knee to propose. But the leap year brings something special for those women who are desperate to pop the question. It’s the only day when traditionally women can say “Will you marry me?” So if you’re still waiting for The Question from The One, go for it!

Try something new
It’s easy to get stuck in old ways so today, force yourself to try something new. It may be something simple, like cooking up a new recipe for your dinner or a bit more daring, like attending a life drawing class.

Whatever you get up to today make the most of your extra day. What are you waiting for? Take the leap!
